The Karat System
A very common mistaken is with the misspelling of the word carat. The term carat actually refers to the weight of a gemstone. To help you better understand the karat system and the amount of pure gold found in each karat, please refer to the following:
* 24 karat (24K) gold is 100% pure gold.
* 18 karat (18K) gold consists of 18 parts gold and 6 parts of another metal(s). This calculates into approximately 75% gold.
* 14 karat (14K) gold consists of 14 parts gold and 10 parts of another metal(s). This calculates into approximately 58.3% gold.
* 10 karat (10K) gold consists of 10 parts gold and 14 parts of other metal(s). This calculates into approximately 41.7% gold. It should be noted that 10 karat gold is the least amount karat designation that can still be recognized as gold by the
US standards.
