14 karat  gold  filled vs. gold plated

14 Karat Gold filled jewelry is often confused with gold plated jewelry. While similar in characteristic, neither are actually solid gold. The main difference is in its quality, which can be quite significant.

"Gold Plated" is unregulated in the jewelry industry. Its term simply means that there is gold over the outer layer of a base metal. IIt is created by using an electro-chemical process. Gold plated can range from being very minute amounts of gold to very large amounts of gold. There is no way to be certain whether the quality is poor or high quality without buying it and wearing it.

On the other hand, gold filled jewelry is a term that is actually regulated within the USA. It should be noted that different countries regulate gold fill differently.  It is created by heat and pressure bonding a thin layer of gold to a brass core.  Within the USA, Gold Filled jewelry is required to have a minimum gold quantity of 1/20th the weight of the gold jewelry item. Consequently, Gold Filled jewelry is uniform in quality.
