Rhyolite is a semi-precious gemstone. It chemical compound is comprise of finely crystalline granite. Other minerals include iron, silica, and potassium. Colors of Rhyolite also vary depending on the percentage of said minerals. The stone is very tough and durable. Rhyolite is very similar to Basalt. It is formed by quickly cooling lava.
Rhyolite is stunning and beautiful gemstone. However, over exposure to light, heat or even water can dull it.
Today, Rhyolite continues to be found and mine in
Oregon; it's called “ Oregon Opal” for the Opal is formed in what is called ‘thunder eggs’; the Opal forms in the center of the egg and the exterior outer layer is the Rhyolite.
