 Hematite :
Hematite is a naturally occurring stone. It is one of the most abundant minerals found on this planet. Hematite has a high concentration of iron, approximately 70%. It chemical compound is Fe2O3 Iron oxide.
The hematite stone has also been known by other names aka “iron stone”. Hematite obtained its name from the Greek word “haem”, which means blood because of its resemblance to the reddish color in the stone. There are numerous forms of hematite with each having their own individual names. For example, Specular Iron ore aka “looking glass ore” has a luminous metallic luster
Hematite has a wonderfully unique and seductive appeal. In Jewelry making, it is often used with pearls as an excellent accent. It is an opaque mineral. Its characteristic is of a sleek, glossy, rich dark, and polish look about it. Similar to the appearance of metal, it is also very heavy. Minute amounts of Hematite can be found in such common minerals as red rock, and sandstone. Hematite's popularity peaked in Europe during the Victorian eran, and has recent had a resurgence in the US.
In 1998 Gray Hemaitite mineral was seen in abundance on the planet Mars by the infrared spectrometer, near the Martian equator at 0° longitude. A substantial deposit was found near the Martian equator in a 500 km region called Sinus Meridiani. The discovery raised the interesting question as to whether water was once present in that area. It relates to Mars in other ways as wells. For example, the Romans considered Hematite the Roman God of War. They glorified Mars more than the Greeks, as theconsidered it as Ares. Romans also took Hematite to battle for protection as they thought it would make them invincible.
Throughout history, ancient
Egypt used Hematite as decorative symbols on or inside their burial tombs. The Egyptians used Hematite in amulets. Some of these Hematite amulets wre used to treat inflammation. In prehistoric times, Hematite was the instrumental material used in early cave painting. Today, Hematite can be seen as polishing compound and is still used as paint dye. Its blood red color in the powdered from lends itselft well to use as a pigment.
In the 50's it was a major discussion because of its magnetic components. In some cultures, it is used as a medicine stone with magnet powers that promote healing, vitality, and wellness.
